In 1989, the E6 was newly constructed as 2 and 3 lanes with a concrete road surface between Jessheim Nord to Mogreina in Ullensaker municipality.
Between 2007 and 2009, the E6 was expanded to 4 lanes between Hovinmoen and Dal, approx. 10 km. The works include a complete renovation of the Smestad tunnel. The length of the tunnel is approx. 500 metres and it is situated at Ring 3 in Oslo.
