Ofotbanen is a 43-kilometer stretch of track from Narvik Harbor to the Swedish border at Bjørnfjell. The railway track is linked to the Swedish national railway network. Ofotbanen has passenger traffic, ordinary freight trains and above all heavy traffic of heavy and long ore trains .
A strong growing demand has made it it necessary to increase the capacity on the railway.
Bjørnfjell station is the easternmost of the five stations on Ofotbanen between Narvik and the Swedish border. The station is located on the plateau of Bjørnfjellet, a highland plateau with an approx. 500 meters above sea level.
The existing station has three tracks with a length of 500 m and one side track with a length of 70 m. The station is exposed to high mountain climate with low temperatures, wind and drifting snow. The main exchangers on tracks 1 and 2 are located inside a snow protective structure. There is a platform in front of the station buildings facing track 1. The old access road crosses the railway near the station area and the project has built a culvert under the tracks in the summer of 2012 for among other reasons for hikers and skiers whom require to cross the railroads. The buildings around the station are defined as heritage sites. E06 Railway engineering includes superstructure and all railway engineering electrical work for the project.
E07 Snøoverbygg includes carpentry and steel work for the establishment of two new snow Protective Structure. Snow Protective Structure located at Bear Mountain Drive, respectively east and west of the station. Snow Protective Structure in the West will be constructed with the main support system of laminated wood, and will be constructed as an extension of existing snow Protective Structure, about 25meters length. The main carrying system for snow Protective Structure in east executed in steel, total length about 200 m Both snow Protective Structure shall be installed on foundations built in 2013 and 2014.
