Contract E04 Substructure Bjørnfjell passing loop

Because of the introduction of longer trains on the Ofot railway there is a need to extend all the passing loops on the Ofot railway. On the Swedish side 8 of the 12 psasing loops have already been extended, and in 2013 a further 10 of 12 wll be extended. LKAB's chance to ship iron ore to the markets depends on the Ofot railway to Narvik. LKAB warns of increased traffic in the coming years in its project LKAB 37 (37 million tons per annum). The mining company Northland Resources (AS) has decided to use Narvik as an iron ore harbour from January 2013. The first shipment was in February 2013 and the expect full production from 2015. Other goods traffic is also increasing.
Bjørnfjell shall be extended to a station with 3 long tracks approx. 1100 m that allow for simultaneous arrivals that can handle at least 750 m long trains. A new side track from track 1 just west of the subway station at 40.13 - 40.28 km with arrival from the east shall be developed. A broad cutting with an operational road eastwards along the south side of the tracks shall be developed. The platform shall be demolished and a new platform with a neight of 55 cm and 220 m shall be constructed. Three snow avalanche shelters are to be demolished in the east, and one, possibly two, are to be reconstructed. The existing snow avalanche shelter in the west is to be extended by 25 m.
The extension of the passing loops involves moving the points in the west and east, and the points are to be replaced. New heating for points is to be established. The existing tracks in the station area are to be replaced with new material. The installations for the contact line are from 2008 and shall be kept as far as possible. The existing signal installations are to be replaced and some signals must be moved. There will be no major changes to the electricity supply the current installations are to be kept.
