"Approach Mo i Rana" is a collaborative project wherein several sub-projects will be carried out in Mo i Rana. The project owner and contracting parties are the Norwegian Coastal Administration and Rana Municipality, and the collaboration is regulated by a formal collaboration agreement between the organisations.
The project includes dredging and construction of a new deep water quay at Langneset, west of the Rana industrial terminal and dredging at the Toranester terminal.
The purpose of the project is to reduce the risk of ship accidents, increase the capacity of the harbour infrastructure and improve accessibility for ship traffic that comes to call at the terminals in Mo i Rana.
The project can be summarised as follows:
- Establishment of a landfill site
- Dredging of Toranes and Langneset
- Establishment of new quay and back areas at Langneset

The purpose of the project is to reduce the risk of ship accidents, increase the capacity of the harbour infrastructure and improve accessibility for ship traffic that comes to call at the terminals in Mo i Rana.
The project can be summarised as follows:
- Establishment of a landfill site
- Dredging of Toranes and Langneset
- Establishment of new quay and back areas at Langneset
Establishment of a landfill for contaminated soil at Langneset.
During the project, a landfill will be built to handle contaminated soil and to establish a back area for the new quay. The landfill must have the capacity to handle all contaminated materials from the dredging.
The landfill will be constructed with two stone embankments (sea walls) from land out to sea. A straight sheet piling wall will be established at the front. The sheet piling must be protected against corrosion.
To improve the geotechnical conditions, two significant measures must be taken:
- Local soil in the area must be drained by establishing vertical drainage.
- Contaminated soil deposited at the landfill must be stabilised. This is done by adding a binding agent (e.g. lime, cement, slag, etc.) to the contaminated soil.
Dredging (deepening) at the Toranester terminal
- Planned depth 8.3 m (ref. nautical chart zero) inner part
- Planned depth 11.3 m (ref. nautical chart zero) outer part
- approx. 11,5000 m3 of contaminated soil
- approx. 30,000 m3 of clean soil
- Contaminated sediments will be deposited in a new landfill at Langneset.
- Clean sediments will be deposited in the sea at an approved seabed disposal site in Ranfjorden.
- Dredging slopes must be protected against erosion.
Dredging (deepening) at Langneset
- Planned depth -15.3 m (ref. nautical chart zero)
- approx. 10,500 m3 of contaminated soil
- approx. 60,000 m3 of clean soil
Establishment of a new pile quay with associated back areas at Lagneset
After the contaminated soil is deposited, the landfill area will be finalised to be used as a back area for the quay. This is done by filling the area with blasted stone and finishing with an asphalt surface.
A conventional pile quay with a concrete cover will also be established in front of the landfill/back areas.
In addition to this, the entire area will be prepared for completion so that the area is ready for use after the project is finalised.
