The River monitoring program is a part of the Norwegian Authority’s basic monitoring. The objective is to document the levels of environmental toxins and nutrients in Norwegian rivers, provide information about effects of climate change, and contribute to classification of rivers in-line with Vanndirektivet (the Water Framework Directive). Purpose of the program: 1) measure concentration and changes over time for environmental toxins and nutrients in Norwegian rivers; 2) contribute to classification of rivers in-line with the Water Framework Directive; 3) capture changes in water quality due to climate changes or other human impacts; 4) contribute to more knowledge about climate-related processes; 5) contribute data to explain changes in the eutrophication situation and environmental toxin levels along the Norwegian coast; 6) calculate direct emission of nutrients and selected environmental toxins to Norwegian harbour areas in order to estimate the contribution of pollutants from watercourses to the coastal areas. The notice concerns monitoring in 2021-2025, with reporting including 2026. See the full description in Annex B.
