The purpose of the procurement is to help ensure food safety in that meat and milk from sheep and cattle can be approved for human consumption even if the animals have been grazing in areas with radioactivity. When animals are given a supply of giese salt (Berlin Blue), less of the radioactive material caesium is stored in the muscles and tissue of the animal, and the meat can be eaten.
