The Pathology Section at Østfold Hospital receives 30 000 preparations a year for histological examinations. This generates approx. 112 500 tissue blocks. The amount is increasing, and a further growth of 5-10 % a year is expected. In order to cope with this increased amount of samples, the contracting authority would like to optimise several of the work processes. The procurement will contribute to optimising the work flow for conveying. Positive knock-on effects are also wanted for other work processes. We do not want the new work flow for conveying to have negative knock-on effects on other work processes such as macro cutting or sealing. There is a need to increase the current capacity for conveying histological preparations. This applies to both the number of machines and the work flow. The contracting authority now has 3 conveying machines; 2 Thermo Fischer Excelsior ES and a Thermo Fischer Excelsior AS. The two ES models will be kept, whilst the AS will be discarded when the new equipment is implemented. The minimum required capacity for processing is 1400 biopsy cassettes of formalin-fixed tissue material a day, (a combination of normal and mega-cassettes). The required capacity is the sum of the current and new conveying machines.

The hospital will get better continuity and a sample flow that is quicker than the current sample flow by using several conveying machines with good flexibility. Feedback is also wanted as to whether quick conveying will contribute to improved sample flow, or whether it could be advantageous to have several machines for conventional conveying.
