Satellite communications for the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research's (IMR) vessels

The Norwegian Institute of Marine Research has a need for a new rental contract with a supplier who can offer satellite communication systems for our vessels. We own and operate six research vessels, four of which are ocean-going, and it is for the latter that the Agreement concerns. In addition, we have two vessels under construction, the New Dr. Fridtjof Nansen and the Crown Prince Haakon. The New Dr. Fridtjof Nansen is scheduled for completion in August 2016, and the Kronprins Haakon is scheduled for completion in August 2017. Both have prepared space for mounting the antenna as well as equipment below deck. Delivery of equipment for each of these two vessels will be agreed upon separately.
The Dr. Fridtjof Nansen, which is currently operational, will probably be phased out when the New Dr. Fridtjof Nansen is delivered, but it is also possible that it will operate in northern waters after this. It is necessary to have a system in which we are linked to the IMR internal operational network via satellite transmission. At present the telephone system is connected to the Institute's telephone central via a Media Gateway.
There is also a need for a TV system via a dedicated aerial. One challenge our vessels have is the limited space available for installation of the equipment, particularly on Håkon Mosby.
At the present time, we have relatively old equipment on all our vessels, and new antennas and installations under the deck are planned to be located where the old ones have been installed.
The existing cables can be used, but if the quality is not adequate, the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research will pay the costs incurred for this. The Norwegian Institute of Marine Research is responsible for all the cabling on the two vessels that are under construction.
The installation of the equipment is to be carried out during the shipyard stay that is planned from the November to mid January. G. O. Sars, Johan Hjort and Håkon Mosby will be at a shipyard in Vestlandet. Dr. Fridtjof Nansen is to be taken when possible (spring/summer 2015) in West Africa (Las Palmas — Cape Town). The equipment is to be installed on Kronprins Haakon at the shipyard in Italy and the equipment shall be installed on the new Dr. Fridtjof Nansen at the shipyard in Spain at a date for installation that is to be agreed.
