Gloppen Municipality is located in Nordfjord in Vestland County. Gloppen has approx. 5,700 inhabitants, and there are more than 2500 households in and by Sandane, the municipality centre. Byrkjelo is a rural community in the municipality that is located 135 m above sea level and 20 km from the centre of Sandane. The fire chief in Byrkjelo has a relatively large area that must be covered, and the area of responsibility includes roads that have a bad standard. Utvikfjellet is in close proximity, which is 600 m above sea level, and has a steep road up to ever increasing holiday home developments.
The E39 goes through the area with heavy through traffic, especially in the summer.
