NRK 2023/1436 - Procurement of hardware for VMware

The current virtualised platform system has reached the end of (technical life) and must therefore be replaced. All vmware esx servers and accompanying san-storage shall be replaced. Fibrechannel network equipment shall also be phased out due to the status of end-of-life. Hyper converged server and storage system that shall replace the current outgoing VMware infrastructure. The system shall cover the current need for VMware based virtualised servers and the services that run on them, but also future needs for virtualisation of NRK ́s physical servers and services. The current virtualised platform is used by several types of work flow that include a number of different applications related to media production, IT infrastructure and general applications. A new virtualised platform must be able to support heavy applications such as database servers, but also CPU intensive tasks such as transcoding. Future expansions of the virtualised platform must also support GPU integration and VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure).

Hovedtrekk ved prosedyren:

At the head office at Marienlyst and the external data centre in Oslo, a hyper converged system shall be set up at both of these locations as replacements for the current VMware clusters. Currently there is no need for a stretched VMware cluster between these locations and both locations shall be replaced as-ice. However, it is important for NRK that the proposed system can be scaled in the future as regards the expansion of the procured VMware clusters, but also if there is a need for a stretched cluster between these locations or new locations in the Oslo area.
