Marine blue forests such as seagrass, salt marshes and kelps provide key ecosystem services for human well-being, yet this role is still widely underappreciated in society, which in the long run jeopardises the conservation of these key habitats that are declining worldwide. The aim of the Blue Forests Education project is to improve the skills and competences of teachers, students, and future environmental professionals (university students) on the ecological, societal and economic benefits and values of blue forests, to build professional capacity that results in higher awareness and drive for conservation of this natural capital. Project partners include CCMAR (The Centre of Marine Sciences of the Algarve), GRID-Arendal, Ocean Alive.

To address the project goals, we will deliver a series of education, training and participatory events targeting university students and teachers, supported by a Digital Learning Platform that will feature modules with lectures, reading comprehension quizzes, and a robust library of resources on the ecological and economic values of blue carbon ecosystems.

Tasks and deliverables
Develop the content for three modules: 1) Ocean Literacy and Climate Change; 2) What are Blue Forests?; 3) Blue Forests Superpowers: Ecosystem Benefits. The target audience is students at the upper secondary school to bachelor’s degree level, as well as teachers with limited exposure to the topic of blue forests. The first completed module will be used as a template for project partners to follow. All modules will be developed in English. Portuguese is considered an advantage. The modules will consist of:

1. Resources: Gather a range of resources to be featured throughout modules (scientific texts, articles, tools, infographics, etc). Project partners may contribute to building this resource bank. Resources will feed into the written text for teachers, but all wouldn’t need to be mentioned explicitly.

2. Lectures: Coordinate with selected lecturers who are to give two or three 10-15-minute-long recorded presentations to cover key topics per module. If agreed on by all parties, lead one of these three module lectures. All resources lecturers refer to or use for giving presentation would have to be reflected in the module resources. Each lecture must also be transcribed for later translations and subtitling.

3. Written text: Write text to accompany each module for teachers, so level of technical writing can be more advanced. Goal for this section is to make teachers feel comfortable and prepared to teach this subject and field student questions. Not everything must be covered in text, but the resources included should be extensive for deeper reading. The length of text will be no more than two pages of a word document. Critical thinking questions are to be developed for teachers to use throughout the teaching modules.

4. Quizzes or exercises: Find or make an online quiz to test comprehension after every lecture.
5. Teach remotely in the International Summer School in July (maximum of 3 hours).
Timeline
TASK 01: January 2023: 1-2 Preliminary meetings to occur.
TASK 02: By end of February 2023: Draft version of one of the modules built out and ready for review. By end of April 2023: Draft version of the 3 modules are ready for review.
TASK 03: By mid-June 2023: after review, all modules are finalised (resources, written texts, lecture transcriptions and quizzes) and lectures are recorded.
TASK 04: July 2023, online teaching during the International Summer School.
