The reference fleet is a selected group of Norwegian fishing vessels that, for financial compensation, give the Institute of Marine Research detailed information on their individual catches and on their general fishing activities. The aim is to have vessels that have an operations pattern that is representative for the vessel group in question. When establishing the reference fleet, emphasis will be put on achieving the best possible nationwide cooperation in the fleet. The sample taking and processing of the collected data is done with the same procedures that the Institute of Marine Research's own research vessels use.
A Reference Fleet of Seagoing fishing vessels larger than 28 metres was initiated in autumn 2000. In the last contract period it has included 15 vessels. An equivalent coastal reference fleet was established along the entire coast in autumn 2005, from Varanger to the Oslo fjord. This Coastal reference list incudes 22 coastal vessels, mainly less than 15 meters in the gear category nets / line, but also 3 shrimp trawlers and 2 Danish seine boats.

The Institute of Marine Research would like to continue and renew the Coastal Reference Fleet. The contracting authority shall enter into an agreement on services to the Reference Fleet from 12 vessels (detailed description in Annex 4).
The crew on board the vessel with take samples of their catches, including by-catches and non-landed catches throughout the year. This is to be done in accordance with the Instructions for the Seagoing Reference Fleet for 2022, see the attached contract documents, annex 2.

Training in sample taking will be given. Visits on board each vessel is part of the training and will be carried out minimum once a year. An annual meeting is held at the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen.
