In the Cleaner Harbour project, measures were carried out to prevent unacceptable spreading of pollution from sediments in Trondheim Harbour. The measure works were carried out in 2015-2016. In authorisation from the the Norwegian Environment Agency (permit no. 2014.448.T given 4 November 2014 and amended 26 May 2015) there are requirements concerning monitoring after measures are performed. A monitoring program has been developed with methods for monitoring (NGI, 2017 and NGI, 2021). The surveys for 2022 including the monitoring program from 2021 will now be carried out.

Previous surveys are summarised in the report ‘ Renere havn - overvåking [Cleaner Harbour - monitoring]. Annual Report 2019‘ (NGI, 2019) and ‘ Renere Havn - Overvåking av tiltak [Cleaner Harbour - Monitoring of measures]. Annual report 2020’ (NGI, 2021).

The following will be performed some time in 2022:

- Physical examinations of cover layers.

- Physical examinations of seabed disposal sites.

- Chemical sampling of cover layers.

- Chemical sampling in water phase - recontamination (sediment traps).

- Ecological condition classification.

- Visual examinations, re-establishing of biota.

- Biota examinations.

- Waterside disposal - Seawater samples (note that sampling in wells is based on

monitoring program NGI, 2021)

- Reporting of results in aquatic environment.

This will be carried out two times in 2022:

- Seabed disposal site - diffusion chamber and passive samplers in the water phase.

The results will be summarised in a report to the Norwegian Environment Agency.

Option 1: Depending on results from the physical examinations, there may be a need to assess necessary measures on the cover layer. This is relevant if physical examinations show significant erosion on the seabed disposal site. It may also be relevant if significant erosion is revealed (ditches without growth for example) in other areas. The option only deals with evaluation of need for measures and proposals to measures, not the actual implementation of any measures.

Option 2: If a sufficient sample material of biological samples (mussels) is found, we can request analysis of PFOA and PFOS in biota and sediment. We therefore also request evaluation of the results (environmental condition for these parameters) in the Annual Report.
