The mission is part of the international mackerel and horse mackerel egg mission that takes place every third year.
The area that will be covered includes the sea west of Scotland, the areas around the Faroe Island and further toward the Norwegian coastline south of latitude 66.
Departure and arrival ports will be Bergen, but there will also be a port call in the middle of the mission, most likely at Torshavn in the Faroe Islands.
The contracting authority will participate with a total of eight persons.

The main focus of the mission will be collection of plankton samples (fish eggs) with the help of Gulv VII sampler which the contracting authority will bring.

The vessel must have a suitable crane/winch and placement facilities for this equipment (https://www.marine.ie/Home/site-area/areas-activity/fisheries-ecosystems/mackerel-and-horse-mackerel-egg-larval-surveys).

Sampling with Gulf VII will take place every other hour throughout the entire day. 10 knots will be the normal speed between stations.

The plankton samples will be processed fresh on-board and cooling is necessary. In this connection we need access to a freezer for making ice-blocks in ten litre buckets and two litre ice-boxes. After processing, the plankton samples will be fixed in formalin and ethanol.

For processing and conserving of the plankton samples we need to have a lab with exhaust/point and chemical cabinet. The lab must have bench space for three work spaces with microscopes. See more information under Requirements.

The vessel must be well-suited for representative pelagic trawling of mackerel and must have the necessary equipment for this.

The catch volume will be modest, ideally approx. 500 individuals (mackerel) each time. Trawling will typical take place up to two times per day the first week, thereafter approx. two times per week.

Individual samples will be taken from the mackerel catch and the vessel must therefore have a suitable Lab for sampling of fish. Three persons must be able to work simultaneously and there must be a suitable bench for weight, length measuring board, laptops etc. the contracting authority will bring.

It is an advantage if the fish sampling room and plankton lab is separated, but this is not a requirement.
