Removal of Ownerless Aquaculture Installations in Nordland

Mussel farming was started as a new growth industry in Norway in approx. the year 2000. A large number of mussel installations were established along the coast. The industry met a number of challenges and several companies went bankrupt. The situation resulted in a number of ownerless, disabled mussel installations, including those in Nordland. Most of these ownerless installations have been removed since 2008, either on a voluntary basis, or under the direction of the Directorate of Fisheries and the Norwegian Coastal Administration. However a few ownerless installations still remain in Nordland County.
The Norwegian Coastal Administration Nordland will remove ownerless aquaculture installations that can be a threat for traffic at sea and an environmental risk if they are not removed. The work will be carried out as a mission. NOK 2 500 000 excluding VAT has been put aside for the mission. The Norwegian Coastal Administration intends to remove as many installations as possible. The Norwegian Coastal Administration will participate in the mission and administer waste deliveries during the mission. The components of the installations that are removed must be delivered to a certified waste disposal facility in accordance with the Norwegian Coastal Administration's instructions.
