This acquisition concerns the rental of an ice-going ship to carry out a MAREANO research-cruise in 2021 in the Barents Sea north of Svalbard with a duration of 4 to 6 weeks, preferably in the period August-October. The purpose of the MAREANO mission is to map the geological, biological and chemical environment of the seabed in order to generate knowledge to be used in national management plans for Norwegian sea areas in accordance with current identified mapping needs. Knowledge from the MAREANO programme is continuously published, i.a. at www.mareano.no

The MAREANO programme is cross-discipline and multi-institutional and the mapping is carried out in cooperation between the Norwegian Mapping Authority, the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) and the Institute of Marine Research (IMR). The MAREANO programme is lead by a multi-institutional program group, but the management group consists of five Norwegian government departments.

The mapping of the geological, biological and chemical environment of the seabed will be carried out in areas where the MAREANO programme has high-resolution bathymetric charts based on measurements administered by the Norwegian Mapping Authority. The mapping of the geological, biological and chemical environment of the seabed is carried out by using multiple types of tools such as bottom grabs, multicore samplers, beam trawls, epibenthic sleds, towed HD video footage of the seabed, as well as bottom penetrating echo sounder and CTDs/water collectors.
