As the overall authority, the Norwegian Environment Agency is responsible for ensuring that safety signs are set up in protected areas. The safety signs shall inform visitors that they are entering or located in a protected area and what form of protection applies. The signs will be set up where they are easily visibly, most often at trails and roads where the visitors pass the border to the area. They can also be placed other places, for e.g. Easily visible on the islets and islands and on beaches where people arrive by boat.

The Norwegian Environment Agency will enter into a 4 year framework agreement for the delivery of posts that protective signs will be attached to. The contract will be used by the Norwegian Environment Agency, county governors, administration committees for protected areas and others who have administrative responsibility for protected areas. The total will be between fifty and a hundred agencies or organisations that can purchase sign posts that will be includes in the contract. Overview of what these are will be obtained. Orderers who are not listed in the overview must document that they are included in the contract. Sign posts will not be delivered to other than these. The contract concerns production and delivery of sign posts for safety signs in the same size and with the same look and colour as the current ones. This applies to 2 types of sign posts in different materials, fixed steel and salt water resistant aluminium of varying lengths. In addition, the contract includes accessories to secure the sign posts, such as earth rods, stabilisers, post anchors and top caps.
