An automation solution was procured in the start up year in the new building (O-wing) in 2017, which primarily covered clinical chemistry and assays as used in immune chemistry. In the following years, several stand alone instruments were procured in connection with breakages or the need for new functionality. This has contributed to totality becoming more fragmented than originally, with several individual instruments from multiple different service providers. This increasing complexity has had significance for operations, administration and cost efficiency. The cost level has become unnecessarily high and the risk for errors is higher than desirable.

The new automation solution that shall now be procured will be ‘the hub’ that connects and controls pre-requisites for the majority of processes in the Medical Laboratory department. A main objective for the introduction of the new automation solution will be to reduce response times and variations. Through a short response time measured from the time of sampling, diagnostics and further development can be implemented in a more focused and effective manner. The new solution shall thus establish both prerequisites concerning response time and new functionality for automatic reflex testing and quick subsequent requisitioning so that clinical practice can be further developed to be the most beneficial for patients.

Such a solution is based on the following basic assumptions.

— Tests taken in Nordland Hospital will arrive at the automation in a so-called ‘bulk input’ without manual handling after the test is sent from the sample taker.

— The analysis time on the instrument must be a maximum of 20 minutes for the majority of analyses where immune chemical or clinically chemical methods are used.

— Experienced response time for patient responsible clinics shall typically be 25 — 35 minutes.

— An agreement with the chosen primary service provider will regulate the responsibility conditions and consequences of deviations from these assumptions, hereunder describing sanctions.

— Further development and improvement of solutions through strategic cooperation will be a prerequisite in order for good results to be measured and maintained over time. The primary service provider is thus intended to take a role as a strategic partner.
