History:On 29 and 30.10.2014 there was a big flood in Odda. Record measurements of the water flow were recorded in the river Opo, 780 m³/s. This led to massive damage along the river banks and 4 houses were taken by the flood waters.Hjøllo bridge is 1 of 4 road bridges in Odda that crosses the rive Opo. The bridge was built in 1068/69 and it relieved a previous narrow truss bridge over the river. The bridge has now been demolished after the damage caused on 29 and 30.10.2014 and replaced by a temporary marbay bridge.During the night the river sent approx. 1 m above the bridge plate on the eastern side (the Hjøllo side) of the bridge. The river eventually dug behind and under the bridge arch on this side and the bridge sank down approx. 2 m. In November the bridge was opened again for traffic with its new and crooked position.In the period after the flood, NVE has carried out major flood protection work by plastering large parts of the river course. The river course has also be straightened and lowered in parts. Downstream of Hjøllo bridge the river course has been lowered and in addition the width of the river in this area has been increased.The existing bridge has been demolished and it shall be replaced with a new bridge with a somewhat greater span width.In addition to the new bridge and the plastering work that has been carried out, a 300 m long concrete wall shall be set up on the Hjøllo side. More plastering and preventive work shall also be carried out on both sides of the river in order to secure houses and areas by the river.45 000 00055 000 000
