The green corridor shall be used as a park area and transport corridor for connecting different activities and places together with each other, at the same time as functioning as green infrastructure for climate adaptation. The landscape along the stream shall secure the town from floods, strengthen the green structure, give a better town environment and better water quality. The green corridor shall also strengthen the natural diversity, reopen the stream for fish and be central in the development of a better town environment in the centre of the urban area Skien-Porsgrunn.The project is being carried out in order to modernise the flood and surface water management with the help of landscape architecture. The stream that runs between the dammed up Hvitsteintjern lake, through a grey urban landscape characterised by large asphalted surfaces and a river valley partially filled with a landfill site and down to the Skien river, shall be brought out into the open air and be an attractive landscape element. This shall, through landscape elements, also function as an available green corridor for managing water, from flood regulations to treating polluted water. The urban area lacks access to leisure areas and public parks and green areas. So that the development of the urban area is not just development, but also providing access to attractive residential and working environments, the town needs blue-green corridors and available urban leisure activities. The development does not need to be opposed to natural diversity, water quality and a strong blue-green structure. We need an urban structure where developed areas and blue-green areas form a strong and integrated web.The project is being carried out as a learning arena where water management is collected from a pipe to the landscape and contributes to the development of a good urban environment. Kjørbekk is a landscape corridor and a physical answer to Skien's work with:Flood protection, climate adaptation, better urban environment, community safety, natural diversity, better water quality, close to the town and urban leisure activities, development of green structures and open surface water management. The project is supported with resources from the Norwegian Environment Agency for climate adaptation measures and water environment measures and it is represented at the Norwegian Water Association's annual conference for the Restoration of Water Systems and Wetlands 2016.Skien municipality is a member of the national climate adaptation network, which was established after ‘Fremtidens Byer’. Kjørbekk- from pipe to landscape is the municipality's pilot in this network.
