Grønmo has been Oslo municipality's waste disposal site since 1969, until it was closed for disposal of ordinary waste in 2007. The area is approx. 540 decare, and approx. 7 000 000 m³ waste in a depth of 15-25 metres have been deposited. The area shall now be closed so that it can be released for other purposes. The County Governor of Oslo and Akershus has required closure of area and post-operations, and the Agency for Water and Sewerage Works has requirements in relation to discharge in the municipal sewage network. In addition to the compliance of the County Governor's requirements, the project requires an extra focus on increased gas extraction and facilitation of the development plan proposal The implementation will contribute to fulfilment of Oslo municipality's many environmental goals, both in relation to climate as well as energy. Measures that shall be implemented are i.a.:
* upgrading and maintenance of the environmental engineering infrastructure
* upgrading of the gas disposal plant
* blocking of all surface water
* reduction of the soil water level
* round off and establishment of the upper surface at the disposal site
* opening of waterways and two dams.
