The medical genetics laboratory is a small laboratory in growth. Test quantities are steadily increasing and Helse Midt-Norge (The Central Norway Health Authority) has, amongst other things, medical genetics as an area of priority. An increase in the number of tests and methods is expected in the coming years. The medical genetics laboratory works closely with molecular pathology and also takes into account that the instrument will be used by this laboratory. During 2014, the medical genetics laboratory extracted DNA and RNA from approx. 3 000 tests, across blood, lymphocyte cell culture, amniotic fluid, chorionic villi, paraffin embedded tissue, spleen tissue, saliva and mouth swabs (in descending order). There is often a cue at the nuclein acid extractor that is currently used by the unit, and several different test materials that are to be extracted on the same day. The unit therefore wants to purchase a flexible system, which shall be suitable for the increasing quantity, the variable testing material and increased need to be able to prioritise tests. It is noted that the test quantity can increase to approx. 10 000 tests a year (medical genetic and molecular pathology). The laboratory performs many methods that are sensitive to DNA and RNA quality, and the content of various other substances in the eluate. The laboratory therefore has strong requirements regarding the nuclein acid quality and the other content in the eluate. The laboratory is also dependant on flexibility in regard to adjusting quantity input and output volume, to get a suitable quantity of DNA and RNA in the eluate. This is to avoid unnecessary steps in the laboratory after extraction and in order to adjust the different test materials that come in to the laboratory.
