Environmental monitoring of Oslo Fjord

The monitoring program for the inner Oslo fjord is an ongoing program, which analyzes marine biology and hydrography/hydro- chemistry that has been conducted every year since the 1970s.
The objective of this work is:
— to provide ongoing information about the long-term environmental situation in the inner Oslo fjord;
— to expand knowledge about processes in the fjord and to advise on appropriate improvements;
— to assess the effects of treatment measures and the possible need for further reduction of discharges;
— to assess and forecast extreme events, such as fish kills, larger phytoplankton blooms (blue-green algae).
The challenge ahead is to follow up the EU Water Framework Directive and water regulations that establish goals regarding good ecological and chemical water quality. The program must therefore satisfy the requirements of the Water Framework Directive.
The work is currently being carried out by NIVA in collaboration with the University of Oslo (UiO) and Biology Institute.
The university's boat, the "F/F Trygve Braarud" has been used to collect data analysis. However, the tenderer is free to enter into an agreement with the University or use other vessels or methods of collecting data. Alternative methods must be able to provide results that are comparable with past records.
The sea area covered by the environmental programme applies to the entire inner Oslo Fjord, bounded on the south by Filtvedt/Brenntangen in Drøbaksundet [Drøbak Sound]. All collected data and results for further processing within the programme are National Council property.
