The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) has a central role in the management of oil and gas resources on the Norwegian continental shelf and is an important advisory body to the Ministry regarding the petroleum industry. NPD exercises administrative authority in connection with the award of tracts, exploration for and production of petroleum resources on the continental shelf. NPD has also a national responsibility for data from the continental shelf and has a summarizing and intermediary role in data analysis and decision making.
As part of the effort to get a better overview of potential petroleum resources on the Norwegian continental shelf and opening new areas for petroleum activities, the NPD carries out survey and geophysical and geological data collection on the continental shelf. The studies are funded by grants from the state budget. The data collected is subsequently made available to the industry through the sale of data packages.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Energy use evaluations to obtain information on the efficiency, effectiveness and results in all or part of the Department's responsibilities and activities. The Ministry is now seeking assistance to undertake an external evaluation of the NPD survey operations.
