R&D assignment, the music branch in figures

Norsk kulturråd

Increased attention on the music industry as a business has created a need for more knowledge on the extent and the financial value of the music branch in Norway.
The Arts Council of Norway has with this background been given the assignment from the Ministry of Culture to make an order for a statistics project that shall develop a model to quantify the value of the turnover in the Norwegian music branch. The project shall develop methods for data acquisition, measurements and calculations that with great certainty shall be able to be updated. The Art Council of Norway's ambition is that the project shall form the basis for the establishment of annual branch statistics for the music industry.
The aim for the project is to describe the total music industry's turnover figures for 2012.
The statistics project shall also give an overview of the share that the export income makes up of the total turnover, in order to be able to quantify the music industry as a business area and export actor.
The project shall get data that can highlight how the music industry develops and how different segments of the industry vary over time. In order to describe changes over time the project must be seen as a starting point for future statistic collections for the music industry. In light of this the development of methods for data acquisition, measurements and calculations that are possible to update in the future will be the main challenge of the project.
