Statsbygg has been commissioned by the Ministry of Environment (MD) to design an extension to the Polar Environmental Centre in Tromsø, now called the Fram Centre. The pilot project was conducted as a collaboration and Statsbygg intends to continue the project with a selected interaction group. Parts of the detail project will be included in the initial project. The expansion consists of a new building of 10,200 m² and reconstruction of approx. 1800 m². The area includes among other things offices, laboratories and storage areas.
THe project has specific environmental ambitions. The new building should among other things gratify passive house levels and aims to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions compared to TEK10 buildings. There will be emphasis on reducing energy consumption to a minimum.
The project is part of the pilot project "Cities of the Future". Cities of the Future is a joint program between 13 cities, industry and government. The cooperation's main objective is to reduce urban greenhouse gas emissions and make cities better places to live in. The 13 largest cities and their surrounding urban areas includes about half of the country's population and a significant portion of the emissions related to the production and consumption.
