Procurement of VLBI telescopes

This tender concerns the construction, assembly and delivery of the Twin Telescopes from the suppliers to meet the contracting authority's needs for 2 pcs. VLBI2010 telescope in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. Ny-Ålesund Geodetic Earth Observatory has been operational since 1994. Geodetic VLBI-observations at this location (Svalbard) are of extremely high scientific value. Precise data are very important for navigation and for climate monitoring in the high north. As the northernmost observatory in the world, the station in Ny-Ålesund enhances the level of precision both in the Arctic and for integrated global solutions. With the necessary infrastructure such as scheduled transport services and fiber optic cables, Norway can contribute to establishing an international reference system and securing information about developments in the Arctic with a cost-efficiency which would be difficult to achieve in other locations so far north. The planned upgrade of the existing station is to make the Ny-Ålesund Geodetic Earth Observatory a Core Network Station. In addition to meet the current requirements for precision this upgrade is important due to age and the risk of a breakdown of today's telescope. The new network station in Ny-Ålesund will include all geodetic techniques. The new telescopes and the other instruments are planned to be operational in 2018. Removal of the existing telescope is planned in 2021. The modernizing will include a radio telescope system consisting of two identical radio telescopes – Twin Telescopes Ny-Ålesund (TTNÅ). Both radio telescopes will be dedicated to the observation programs of the IVS, and will replace the existing 20 m radio telescope in Ny-Ålesund.
