Evaluation of the Southern and Eastern African Regional Centre for Women's Law

Norad (Direktoratet for utviklingssamarbeid)

Norway has supported the development of women’s law as an academic discipline in Eastern and Southern Africa for 25 years. The long term development objective of the programme, has been to improve the situation of women in Eastern and Southern Africa, by enhancing their legal and social status.
In 2000 the women’s law programme changed from being a programme within the Department of Private Law at the University of Zimbabwe (UoZ) to become a Women’s Law Centre (WLC). Later the WLC was upgraded to a regional Center having its own constitution. The Southern and Eastern African Regional Centre for Women’s law (SEARCWL) has offered a master in women’s law since 2003.
The Norwegian support to SEARCWL came to an end in 2012. The last phase extending from 2008 to 2012 was the fourth phase in the agreement between MFA and UoZ. As the programme has been supported for 25 years the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Zimbabwe found it appropriate to conduct an independent evaluation in order to document the results of the programme. The evaluation will also assess the sustainability of SEARCWL.
