Emission factors from wood fires in Norway

The Norwegian Climate and Pollution Agency (Klif) would like to carry out measurements of particle emissions from wood stoves in Norwegian households in order to establish specific emission factors for emissions to air of black carbon (BC) from this source.
A project shall be carried out with the aim of giving the best possible estimate of the amount of black carbon (BC), organic carbon (OC) and particles (TSP, PM10, PM2.5) that are emitted from Norwegian wood stoves. Experimental measurements shall be carried out through the project in accordance with the Norwegian Standard (NS:NS3058 and NS3059) for two representative wood stoves; A) Closed stove – old technology (stoves built before 1998) and B) Closed stove – new technology (stoves built after 1998), with the aim of getting an emission factor for BC, OC and the total amount of particles (TSP) as gram per kg burnt wood.
The emission factors for the total amount of particles (TSP) based on the measurement results from this project shall be discussed in the light of emission factors resulting from the approval of types of stoves that are sold in Norway. The discussion shall conclude in a recommendation for factors for use in the Norwegian emission inventory. The measurement results shall also be discussed in light of available literature and it shall recommend a division between the various particle sizes (including PM2.5 and PM10).
